“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread
inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important).
It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult
concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.”
Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)
When mentioned about being an engineer to the general public, they would usually link it directly to Mechanical Engineers as they are not aware of the different expertize fields that lays in the same category. Thus, being unable to explain every possible engineering field out there, engineers are usually just viewed as 'Mechanical Engineers' which may result to experts feeling that their efforts in the industry are not as recognize to the general public.
Thank you, Clarissa, for the explanation.
